Eliza Scanlen was also fantastic as the young teen in Sharper Objects who ran circles around most of the other characters. She's an incredible actress--I can vividly picture her in the new role you describe.

Your piece on Vertigo is outstanding. When movie was released in 1983/4 I was thrilled to be able to see it. Saw it in Newton. Made a significant impact on my relationships.

The Post closed out comments but there are more than 1,200—on a classic movie essay! Kudos, Ty, that’s really something…wonderful piece.

Took me 4-5 viewings of Vertigo to find my way in, but my respect and admiration for it grow with every watch. The story only makes sense as a fever dream; a lot of viewers are disgusted by its impossible plot and, as people often do with Hollywood musicals, gets put down for not being realistic when that’s their projection, not the artist’s intent. Whenever it’s on I tell myself I can’t handle the darkness of it, but if I see a few seconds I’m hooked again.

Question: Is there anything explicit that tells us Judy’s participation in the murder scheme was inadvertent? If so, I’ve missed it and feel a bit goofy.

To me that final shot is one of the scariest in all of Hitchcock. Scottie has arrived at a complete dead end. It’s sort of circular, like the dead end at the beginning where he’s left hanging and we never see how he is rescued (shades of NBNW).

Feels to me like Hitchcock had crossed some line from which there is no return. He experimented throughout his career with style and narrative, but Vertigo feels like a surrender to the void. It’s terrifying and one of the greatest acts of artistic bravery I’ve ever seen.

"The Naked Spur" is not available on the Criterion Channel. They list it as one of the five Anthony Mann movies but it is the only one that is not also on the channel.

I absolutely loved Lovers Rock and still listen to the soundtrack regularly!

Had a Vertigo poster professionally framed recently. When my 6-year-old son and I picked it up from the frame shop, he asked where I was going to hang it.

"I don't know. I just really like the poster and wanted to protect it. I might not hang it anywhere."

After a beat, I added, "You can hang it on the wall of your room when you're in college."
