Lovely list, Ty! As my late, great Mom taught me, It's never to early to introduce kids to the world of film. Second the recommendation of "Emma." (just charming) and agree that "The Apartment" is better for 12 and up, but still a wow. I'd also like to throw in this year's "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On," which I found both funny and touching.

Happy holidays and wishing you a peaceful 2023!

I don't even know how to say how much I LOVE It's Always Fair Weather, which I have watched MANY times. There are a number (meaning, a bunch) of great dance/musical numbers. The trash can dance, Baby You Knock me Out, Gene Kelly on roller skates, "whatever wise" and one of my great movie loves (I wish I know of more films with her), Dolores Gray in Thanks a Lot But No Thanks ("thanks for finding me the famous lost chord"...is that what inspired the Moody Blues?). Plus, it has a real script, a real plot, real characters AND Cyd Cherise! And it's funny. Singing in the rain, I suppose, is better, but this is awfully close.

In other news (was it from 2022 or 2021) I finally saw "Drive My Car". What a wonderful, beautiful, moving film...really got to me big time as I so identified with that profound feeling of loss....

I had the pleasure of teaching the Brian Selznick book Wonderstruck to my middle school class recently. Like The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Selznick uses illustrations to tell half the story. It's enlightening for kids to learn how to read visually, a skill they can then use as they watch movies, including and perhaps especially the film Wonderstruck itself, which is far from straightforward in its storytelling magic.

We watched a bunch of these we hadn’t seen. I really liked Turning Red, which shared a lot thematically with Everything Everywhere All at Once. They would make a great ( though exhausting) double-bill!

Why do you think mother-daughter relationships were the subject of so many (movies this year? These two, Petit Maman, The Woman Queen and The Lost Daughter (and The Eternal Daughter which I’ve yet to see) - maybe I just don’t see enough new movies but it seems like this was the theme of the year.

And tonight was Apollo 10 1/2, nostalgia on steroids (though I was about 10 years older than Stan and grew up on the west coast my childhood looked a lot like his). What a great show! Thank you for recommending it- we would have missed it otherwise.
