Seasonal InfinityComcast customer just returned to active status, my HBOMax monthly bill jumped from $10 to $15.99. The end of Succession Sunday times nicely with my end of month cancellation of HBO. Another $25 increase in other Comcast charges needs further scrutiny- they’re shameless in their pricing.

As far as male friendship movies go, Swingers is still up there for me as one of the best.

wonderful post, Ty--so full of your lively, funny thoughts on these remarkable performers/directors/"creators" and the new Max site--and some fresh movies to boot! Excited to see Holofcener's latest film; she's been one of my favorite writer/directors since "Walking and Talking."

Dear Lord - I forgot about Chuckles the Clown.....that scene is an example of timeless writing and seamless ensemble acting - nothing today is funnier, and little today is AS funny.

Ty, re your comment about Eight Mountains - “one of the better dramas about male friendship, in part because there are so few of them”: True enough. How about the early Kelly Reinhardt film Old Joy as one the few? Very laid back, just two friends on a camping trip catching up on how their lives have turned out. Very well done.

“Otherwise, she might have given it right back to appallingly sexist interviewer David Susskind in the clip shown here;”

Am I missing the link? Thanks!

The Successor WILL be Greg. Grandfather Ewan is the most principled character in the cast, and that must not be allowed to stand in Royworld. Ewan will the see the light, i.e., that in the Capitalist Paradise the only value is the wielding of power and he has plenty of aptitude for that (see his masterful funeral oration). When he sees that his tie-breaking shares put him in a perfect position to be kingmaker (whichever side wins the negotiations), make no mistake, he will put his malleable grandson where the benefit will accrue to the remaining senior Roy brother. Proving that nobody in the cynical CP is as selfless as Ewan has convinced himself that he is. Plus Greg is the most popular character. Adorable, slime and all.

I think of Seven Samurai, Drunken Angel, the Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid as all having a major male friendship element. If you count angels, throw in It’s a Wonderful Life.

For male buddy movies, what about "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"?

Sorry, Succession just wasn't for me. Much like White Lotus, I only lasted a few episodes into it. I am not someone who wants to spend time watching horrible people do horrible things. There's too much of that unavoidable today in real life. Not a single person in either show you can root for. I don't need to have a constantly upbeat show, but I'm tired of horrible people in my face.

And if the weather wasn't so perfect this long weekend, I might have been tempted to pop into a theater. 8 Mountains sounds great. Does Brokeback Mountain count, or is that too romantic?

HBO MAX. Grrrrr!

Thanks for verbalizing our rants around the nation.

This reminds me to take a look at whether it is worth the monthly fee for HBO, by any other name!

With all the streaming services trying to figure out how to stay afloat and turn a profit, they might want to actually make it easier for customers to stay with them.
