This week: The best films newly arriving on streaming services and four new theatrical releases reviewed.
This is the Friday recap of Ty Burr’s Watch List postings for the week. If you’d like to receive this weekly email ONLY, please go to your account page and under “Email notifications” uncheck every box except “Weekly Digest.” If you’d prefer to not receive it at all, uncheck just “Weekly Digest.”
For paid subscribers, I posted a rundown of good movies from recent years that are streaming for no extra charge on the various major VOD services. New titles are added at the start of every month and I’ll do my best to keep you abreast of the worthy ones. Above, Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan in “Ruby Sparks” (2012), on Hulu.
No, “Magic Mike's Last Dance" (⭐⭐1/2) is not about faith healing, although it does involve some laying on of hands, as Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek demonstrate above. Other theatrical releases reviewed: Jafar Panahi’s brilliant "No Bears" (⭐⭐⭐⭐), the touching Belgian drama "Close" (⭐⭐⭐), and Léa Seydoux in Mia Hansen-Løve’s "One Fine Morning" (⭐⭐⭐).
