The description, if I did not know the subject, sounds like "the hero Jim and heroine Helen of "All Creatures Great and Small". Classic simple story of love that gets it right in the end with an assist from warm and caring friends.

Enjoyed the podcast. I think James Mason’s style of acting would have overpowered the film. Roger Livesey’s more nuanced performance complemented Wendy Hiller’s robust portrayal of Joan. I found the sexual tension between them powerful, and when he did try to prevent Joan from leaving, his surge of emotion was much more moving.

A foreign language romance suggestion: Cinema Paradiso. One of my all-time favorites and one that never fails to make me weep.

Who else could end a romance happily with bagpipes and the fulfillment of an ancient curse: “if he shall cross the threshold of Moy, never shall he leave it a free man. He shall be chained to a woman to the end of his days and shall die in his chains.”

What a treat this and all the Powell/Pressburger movies are! Thanks for the great discussion. I’m looking forward to hear the discussion of foreign romantic films.
