Wow, that was some movie! We watched then listened to you two hash it out. The movie, especially the ending, reminded me of an old Twilight Zone episode, one where a man is put on an asteroid as a form of prison, and for good behavior gets an android who looks and acts like a woman, even crying when he berates her as just a machine. But when his sentence is finally up, he thinks of her as human, and wants her to come with him but they don't have room, and to demonstrate to him that she is not human they zap her, and the mechanical interior shows through.

The scene of the doomed child, ignored on the beach by both her and her handler, was terrible - in fact the whole sequence, the mother going in, the father going in, the camper exhausted after trying to save him and she matter-of-factly knocks him on the head and takes him off to his doom. I was jolted today, walking along and seeing a child of about that age standing a little bit apart from his mother. It really brought that scene right back to my mind.

I'm looking forward to the next installment!

I loved listening to your discussion. Although I doubt I would ever watch this movie your conversation held my attention. Sounds as if I'd have nightmares about it, for sure. Great podcast. Thanks.

What a great pick. I went into a FUGUE state after my first screening, a good one. Then read the book it was based on. Scarlett’s finest hour as far as I’m concerned.

Your podcast “sounds” great. Did you simply use Substack’s apparatus? I’m so old school, after 20+ years of podcasting, I never did it outside a radio station studio with all the bells and whistles. I want to join you!

Hi Ty. Like your other commenters this week, I thoroughly enjoyed the podcast and eagerly await more episodes. One question I'd like to raise for comment and discussion. Should these podcasts discuss the endings of the films? I know you invited us to watch the film before the podcast, which I did, but perhaps other viewers might not have seen the film. Regardless, you discuss so much of the film in detail that it seems to me that spoilers abound, no matter your intent. Given that, I'd vote for including a discussion of the ending, since often the power of a film's ending is such a big part of its meaning and value. If you wanted to have it both ways, perhaps you could finish each podcast with a segment that discusses the ending and invite those who haven't seen the film to skip that discussion. Thoughts anyone?
