Collectively we must reinstall civics as a priority for young people and snuff out the dumb and damaging conviction that marching with fun signs is enough. This disaster is happening in large part because the young people most hurt by rights recision don’t exercise their right to vote against it. The excuses from young people for not voting are endlessly inventive: I have to work. I don’t know how. I can’t find a stamp. No candidate worked hard enough to appeal to me personally. They’re all the same anyway. I’ve seen all of these on Reddit and more. They are not only inventive but ridiculous and shameful, and their utterers have helped usher in a term of minoritarian tyranny. This has to stop, and older generations have to be the stoppers. Evangelize about the power of strategic voting, and the terrible cost of remaining on the sidelines when you don’t see a perfect option.

Well stated: “ A radical Supreme Court – five of whose members were installed by Presidents who lost the popular vote, three of whom lied to get their jobs, two of whom have been credibly accused of sexual assault or impropriety, and one of whom is married to an active insurrectionist – has just stripped the women of this country of control over their own bodies.”

Next week "on the chopping block": SCOTUS gutting the EPA and Biden's plans for fighting climate change. What to do? One suggestion: read and consider some of the common sense suggestions in Katharine Hayhoe's "Saving Us: A Climate Scientis's Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World."

Thank you! So well articulated. I share your anger and outrage and opinions. Time to take action, wherever and however we can. Would it be OK to share your post on FB (with attribution)?

Learn from the enemy. Create a liberal Federalist Society. Create a liberal Alec. Why this wasn't done on the past eludes me. Stop the gnashing of teeth and useless memes. Don't mourn, organize.

I thought you were a tv critic. I get enough sermonizing in church.

Thank you, Ty. Thanks. I'm forwarding your words to everyone who feels paralyzed.

Preach Ty! Sometimes it ain’t about the movies or TV shows. It’s about using whatever forum you have to talk about standing up for what you believe.

It is critical that the Democrats retain control of Congress. A neutered Mitch McConnell and an inert Kevin McCarty is imperative. This is very achievable if people are smart about how they donate to political campaigns. Don’t waste money on campaigns where either A. The candidate already has enough money, or B. They’re so far behind, it’s hopeless. There is a research group that has done the work for you: Force Multiplier. Go to www.forcemultiplierus.org. Force Multiplier is laser focused on assisting people in supporting the most realistic races. I’m using them, check them out.

Beautifully stated, Ty. It is a really challenging, scary time. I sent your piece to our 4 children to say: "We are sorry....we have your backs.....fight back in any way you can!"

And -- here's another chilling fact to add to the hits we've already taken this week, something else coming soon from the Supreme Court: they are about to rule as to whether the EPA has the right to regulate emissions from infrastructure. See this NYTimes article on West Virginia vs the EPA: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/19/climate/supreme-court-climate-epa.html?searchResultPosition=4

They are coming at our rights --including our rights to clean air and water, and the lives of future generations and the earth -- from all directions.

Might want to check out the Lincoln Project....'The' George Conway getting more done re: Trump and followers, elections, than Democrat Committees.

Shocking, but true. Check out that website.

We have the power to change all this: it’s called voting. Informed voting. I will work at the polls. More importantly, every person should convince two people to vote who might let it slide. 2022 is as important, if not more important, than 2024. VOTE THE F’ING GOP OUT

A thousand thanks Ty, for this excellent, inspiring piece, and all the great links. One of the links led me to The Brigid Alliance, an organization that provides logistical support and funds for those seeking an abortion, no matter where in the country they live. I made a donation, and feel just a tiny bit less despair.

Thank you, you are expressing everything I am thinking/feeling, but It’s so helpful to to (try to) re-set and focus on action instead of just despair.
