I've seen most of those Mills brothers videos: incredible. Joyful. Amazing. And: Stormy Weather includes a lot of great music. I especially like Fat's Waller's Ain't Misbehaving. Fats was brilliant. Makes me think of Cabin in the Sky, which silly as it may seem, had Louis Armstrong as a devil, and Duke Ellington playing in the devil's night club.
Have been a Nicholas Bros lover for decades, got Harold’s autograph (still have it) at a Film Forum evening of clips Bruce Goldstein put together... once sat next to a woman in dance class who sniffed that *her* tap teacher said they were just “a flash act,” which I think isn’t actually a derisive term and refers to a showy style rather than denigrating its practitioners. Figured she had never seen them herself, bc how can you not be slack-jawed and astonished, also glad to be alive?
Btw, what Harold wrote on my little notepad: “Be Happy. Nicholas Bros.”
