While not exactly a rant of Network proportions, still on point with, “might give rise to a conspiracy theory or two as to why the Mouse House is pressuring the show’s producers to make the telecast appeal to apparently everyone except movie lovers. Seriously, who are the Oscars for? Casual moviegoers who only see the big multiplex releases because that’s what lands on their radar? Or people who appreciate the medium in all its iterations and for all its behind-the-scenes artisans? Or, hey, why not both? (And throw in the viewers who come for the fashion show and the ones who settle in with popcorn for three hours of bad jokes and schadenfreude.) ….As it stands, this year’s Academy Awards seems hell-bent on wooing people who don’t like movies — a perverse approach, to put it mildly.”👍
If CODA wins, this MA resident will be very upset. They got so many things wrong in this film. The Berkeley audition was a joke. A very so-so singer getting admitted, with a scholarship, no less? Would not happen. The ocean scenes were so obviously not filmed in Gloucester (I was thinking San Diego, maybe?) The mean girls at the high school, making fun of the heroine of the story for smelling like fish? C’mon, everyone in Gloucester smells like fish! And Cody Smit-McPhee deserves the Oscar for best supporting actor, hands down.
I thought Kirsten Dunst was robbed. A great performance of buckling and crumbling under the weight of hatred and disdain.
I agree that Jasna Duricic in Quo Vadis Aida was robbed but Boris Isakovic was also great as her counterpart - she was desperation, sheer will and despair, he was power, menace and sleaze. That movie resonates with current events.
I did not like West Side Story. It had great sets, great dancing and (of course) great music, but there was no chemistry at all between Tony and Maria - I thought their performances were wooden.
And I agree that Drive My Car should be the winner. And it should be on a double-bill with Vanya on 42d Street (which we re-watched after Drive My Car).
