Not all these films disappear down a rabbit hole. There are intrepid (or infamous, depending on your point of view) armies of collectors with sophisticated tech ripping every flick or show that drops on the streamers. And while industry folks may not like it much, cognoscenti could find an excellent copy of nearly every obscure, otherwise neglected work without breaking a sweat. Not saying I know how... but the prints exist. None of which argues against the immediacy of seeing such films as Lingua Franca now, while it’s easy and, ahem, legit.
I abandoned Netflix sometime mid-pandemic, so I can't easily keep tabs on its role in the deletion games. What is the state of Mati Diop's Atlantics, my usual go-to example of a film Netflix snapped up and then did absolutely nothing with or for? That one isn't licensed anywhere else.
In the case of Atlantics, Criterion has the rights to issue the blu ray. But the release date has never been revealed, and it’s been four years now since the first Netflix airing.
Oh, fascinating! That it was bundled with Scorsese, Baumbach, and others in a Netflix-Criterion deal did not come across my eyeballs at the time. But also this tells us how much to trust expectations set by such press releases.
This looks great. Thanks for the heads up. In the sea of offerings, I most likely would’ve missed it.
Thanks. I would have missed this. It pairs nicely with "Monica", the movie I saw and enjoyed at our local movie theater this past weekend.
This is why I subscribe.

A movie that deserves more attention, and probably preservation.
