A beacon of hope for a week you could probably use one. Destin Daniel Cretton’s film is a successful expansion of his prize-winning short set in a residential facility for troubled teens. Brie Larson, LaKeith Stanfield, Kaitlyn Dever, Rami Malek, and Stephanie Beatriz star.
Years ago I downloaded this film to watch on my Ipod on a plane - two of my least favorite ways to watch movies. I guess it doesn't matter when the movie is good. I openly bawled on the plane remembering the challenging years of my life when I was in residential treatment. I did not know if this movie would work for moviegoers who have no personal background with this kind of treatment facility. Thank you, Ty, for bringing it back to my attention and for recommending it to others. .
Sometimes I think I'm only one of 10 people lucky enough to see Short Term 12, a multi-faceted gem of a movie that has stuck firmly with me since its release. If it were a book, it's the kind a bookseller would gently but firmly press into your hands while urging you to read it.
I was able to catch this on Peacock! So it IS out there. What a beautifully crafted piece. I love this utterly human story. Thanks for the recommendation, I'm going to share it widely with my circle.
I sometimes think my husband and I were the only people to see this gem of a movie in a theater. Thanks for giving it some extra love! That cast!
BTW, John Gallagher, Jr. was also excellent in HBO's The Newsroom (although most media attention went to Jeff Daniels).
