We were staying in an apartment while between homes last year and the TV there had said feature activated. As our situation was temporary, I didn't mess with the settings. The MCU series Moon Knight on Disney+ premiered at that time and I could barely stand it.

Our new home came with two TVs. One of them was set to motion smoothing, which I promptly deactivated after we moved in. Alas, no amount of cinematic veneer could save Moon Knight, which remained incomprehensible.

"Liquid diarrhea" is whatever would be the opposite of an oxymoron. I'm trying to imagine solid diarrhea and, well, the mind [and gorge] balk. Just bought a new LG OLED to deal with the engorging library of 4K content I've been compiling over the last 5 years, and the first thing I did was set up Filmmaker mode, after wincing at the pores and nascent acne of Ana de Armas for approximately 3 seconds. Dammit, 4K, do not kill all my illusions. And god bless whatever code-monkey created Filmmaker mode. Except for football. Green has to be achingly green for football.

Oh my God! I've been cringing at this every time I go to a place with a newer TV. I thought it was high definition or because something was filmed as video instead of film. I am ignorant but know what I see and I HATE it just like you do, Ty. Thank you for explaining!! Thank you most of all for providing an antidote. I remember noting it a long time ago with (yes!) soap operas but there are some people who don't see the difference. I was trying to watch "A Walk in the Woods" with this motion-smoothing at a friend's house and .... yuk. Even the name sounds gaggy, like Pepto Bismol. I much prefer filmmaker mode.

How do I get Nicole Kidman to turn motion smoothing off at the AMC for Avatar 2: Aquatic Boogaloo and Ang Lee movies? I do not come to this place for that!

thank you, Ty!

I was lucky, got tipped to this when I bought a new LG TV years ago, it is absolute sudden death to lyrical imagery. Excellent primer…

😱this is a terrifying reveal Ty…I’m afraid to play with my settings. I feel like I’ve fallen and can’t get up. What to do? I’ll forward this on to my son for guidance on what to do when I return home to my smart tv.

THANK YOU, Ty. As someone who notices this, and it sure does drive me crazy, I used to think of it as the “super high def” effect and it confused me why folks were so excited about high def as a result. Knowing I can turn the damn thing off (sleuthing helmet firmly on) is such a relief.

Thank you thank you thank you for this. I hate the Soap Opera Effect and have been shocked that other people either don't mind it or don't notice it.

Spent half hour on the TV settings as recommended. Great results! My family will now understand what I'm talking about when I say the new TV we have must be set to "home video" since every movie looked like an amateur home video. THANK YOU.

Thanks, Ty. The workaround doesn't seem to work on my 8-10 year old Samsung. The picture settings take me to Dynamic, Standard, Natural and Movie. Movie is the obvious choice, but none of them make the motion any better. A Best Buy techie had this solution. In the main menu, click on System. Scroll down to General. Click on Game Mode. Switch it to On. Voila, movies are movies. The techie explained that gamers want things to go faster and the hi-def mode slows the motion down. Unfortunately, it only works on TV and DVDs. I haven't found any way of making Blu-Ray movies watchable, unless of course they're shot in hi-def, which is becoming more common.

Thank you, Ty! Now I can convince my friends that I am NOT crazy.

And you can tell your friends that this is just another thing you and Tom Cruise have in common:

We just moved and the owners left us a very large LG TV to enjoy. It was set to "Tru-Motion" and I finally had the chance to use Ty's helpful suggestions to get it off. I thought you all might enjoy LG's comments in its how-to: "Cinema purists preferring the dreamier escapism of the silver screen texture presentation of 24 fps will enjoy viewing movies while having Tru-Motion turned "off."
