Ramin Bahrainâs CHOP SHOP, like a slice of Iranian cinema in the shadow of Shea Stadium. A bit on the downer but it blew me away when I first watched it.
Bimal Royâs DO BIGHA ZAMIN, very downer! And aspects of the last 30-40 minutes donât work for me, but still a devastating portrayal, and interesting also because the lead actor (Balraj Sahni) I believe spent time with and maybe worked as a rickshaw driver to prepare.
Recently watched THE KILLING FLOOR, more of a TV movie I guess but I thought it was effective. So many more but these were the first that came to mind.
But really, HARLAN COUNTY USA is incomparable. My jaw was on the floor the entire time I was watching it.
