The Souvenir (Part 1) is free with Prime, and Part 2 is opening at the Coolidge today. I'm planning to rewatch the orginal Sunday and see the sequel Monday, on a double bill with Spencer, with my membership. (Does everyone who lives within driving distance of the Coolidge know that you can see 80 or 90 films a year for about $3 a pop? And with free popcorn!)
The narrartve obliqueness of the original can't be overstated, but some of us are hard-wired to *like* doing work to grasp a story. Those people being some arthose fans, and perhaps surprisingly, many science fiction fans (which is why arthouse sci-fi, a la Upstream Color, is a thriving thing). I once created a sci-fi convention panel called "And Now, the Thrilling Confusion."
Souvenir is very good. It is easy and convenient to consider Julie pathetic until we examine ourselves. Hard to find someone who has not clung and cowered to an unhealthy relationship. Julie doesn’t run because of what is equally intolerable as heroin: being alone. She will find real, true love and realize the relationship with Anthony wasn’t (as I did). Love when her mother tucks her in then goes to bed with her clothes and lights on.
