Hulu’s synopsis is hilarious by comparison: “In this silent film, an office worker deals with the simple joys and tragedies of married life.”

This column today demands reading more than once. The ubiquitous presence of selfies, TikTok and so many other sites plus the political posturing we are subject to every day makes the movie and Mr. Burr's thoughts in parentheses even more salient. When do we come to our senses, if ever?

I would LOVE to see this film. Unfortunately, we do not have access to The Criterion Collection. Not only that, but I'm out of state on that date. I'm hoping I can convince the Brattle Theater to show it some time in the near future.

That, of course, makes me think of that surprising and bizarre movie, A Face In the Crow, with Andy Griffith, who starts out as a drunken bum who can sing country songs becomes a megalomaniac.

Your thoughtful column raises the question of who owns the rights to produce a DVD? It would be a natural for Criterion. Whatever the cost, many people would pay it.

Murray’s story is so haunting, it always makes me melancholy. Excellent meditation on it, thank you, Ty. I do a monthly Zoom watch with a friend, maybe The Crowd will be our October feature, been weighing what silent to show and usually come down between this, Lonesome, and Sunrise, on account of, how can you go wrong?

I love this film...especially the performance of Eleanor Boardman, Vidor's wife. The actors move with such freedom and the camerawork at the end of the silent film era was at its peak...so fluid and innovative. It's always such a shock to switch from viewing a silent film of this quality and then switching to an early talkie where the camera is stationary and so are the actors because of the microphone! I didn't know about James Murray's tragic end. I can't wait to read your book. Are you selling autographed copies online? If so, please add me to your list!

I found TCM but didn't see this film listed. I was blown away by the by the cinematograoghy. t's interesting to see that by the time it dies, some cinematographers had brought their work right up to the new talkies, or maybe in Raging Bull's league. Some hyperbole, yes, but that was some great stuff, IMHO. I look forward to catching it some time. If you see it'll be playing again, please give the newsletter a couple o'days heads-up. But thanks for the recommend, I hope you'll post it in your newsletter with. a couple days heads-up. That would be helpful for an old dude like me. Thanks
