RIP Bob. Sure he'll be raising hell in...well,I guess, hell. If you believe in that sort of thing. That last shot from "Five Easy Pieces" has stayed with me longer, and affected me more deeply, than any other in any other film. It's one of those unresolved, completely unresolvable moments that crystallizes New Hollywood perfectly. Right up there with the closing moments of "Shampoo," "The Long Goodbye," and "Chinatown." Thanks for sharing this, Mr. Burr.

Ty,

Great column - never attributed all that much to Rafelson, but remembered he was worshipped at our alma mater

I loved Mountains of the Moon - I spent some time with Michael Small, the composer - his score is an unrecognized masterpiece.....I must see it again, having just read the River of the Gods, a great book about Burton and Speke. Rafelson was a man of his time in Hollywood - the real McCoy. Sorry I never got to work with him.

The style you chose is evidence of your respect and frankly, I was thrilled and moved. Thank you for describing the arc of this man's life.

Wow.

Not a name I would even have recognized, but what a great collection of films. Five Easy Pieces, The Last Picture show, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's nest: some of my all time favorites.

Wow.

I was so hoping you would write something about Rafelson. Sorry your interview never came to full fruition, but, as usual, your reflections and suggestions got me a little misty.
