Thanks for the tip on the new Buster Keaton book and for linking the dream sequence from "Sherlock Jr." (Woody Allen copied that idea in "Purple Rose of Cairo" but Keaton's is much funnier. He says more in a silent film!) "The Cameraman" is my favorite Keaton film. The silents capture our culture and history...the theater in Sherlock Jr. looks just like the Princess Theatre in the small town I grew up in during the 1950s (except there aren't any rats scurrying between the wooden seats!). Keaton was a genius and so generous. It's fun seeing his father and siblings in his films. I can't wait to read this new book!

As it happens, I watched Sherlock Jr just the other night (I would like to thank the Boston Bruins for falling behind 5-1 in the first period and propelling me into a search for other entertainment for the evening).

I have always been a Keaton fan, going back to watching silents with my father on the local PBS station, through college and clumsy essays. I always preferred him to Chaplin, and admired the way he not only took apart the craft of filmmaking to make it work for him, but the way he did the same for every prop, object and piece of set dressing as well (including, often, the actors). I have the Blesh and Dardis books, and really look forward to cracking this one open.

Hi Ty, I just finished watching "A Hero" and felt as wishy washy throughout about whether Rahim was a good man or a good con. Then I read your review which I also thought expressed many of my own feelings about this wonderful movie. My question is: Why did you only give it 3 1/2 stars and not 4? Just wondering.
